Pakai Tulis #8

2020 is really something else. Can you imagine a human rights activist will back an authoritarian regime? It's highly unlikely but since we live in 2020, it is possible right now.

Many couldn't believe what they have witnessed when a director of a human rights organisation released a statement to urge " foreigners to stay out of the encroachment of democratic values by an authoritarian regime".

"What happened to Mr Kua Kia Soong, defender of human rights?"

"All states have security laws, therefore, Hong Kong should have one as well." - But what about the implications, the hidden agendas behind the implementation? Surely a professor like Mr Kua would understand. Especially when we ourselves have our own oppressive laws here in Malaysia.

"Protestors colluded with foreign forces" - Isn't that the usual rhetoric deployed by the government to tarnish social movements that are against them in the first place? Last I check, the same accusations have been directed to SUARAM before. Moreover, why solidarity from the West is not 'allowed'? The West is an important player in the international community. By uniting forces of the West and East, the World can come together and pressure China to follow universal human rights values and respect self-determination of the Hong Kong people.

"What happened to Mr Kua Kia Soong, defender of human rights?"

Is it because being anti-colonial and anti-West has polluted his mind? Just because the West or the US to be specific, interfered foreign affairs in the past and now, we should turn away aggression and atrocities committed by the East, specifically China?

Maybe Mr. Kua should listen to John Oliver that "It's also completely possible for two things to be wrong at the same time." China can be as heinous as the US, and it is totally fine to condemn both. What Pompeo or Trump's administration done is hypocritical, but he should not dismiss atrocities committed by China. Mr Kua recently seemed to imply that China, in fact, did not detain millions of Uyghurs.

"What happened to Mr Kua Kia Soong, defender of human rights?"

Mr Kua said, "it is none of our business when it comes to national security laws but it is our business if they implement detention without rial and violate human rights." In recent weeks, freedom of expression further deteriorated in Hong Kong. Activists were forced to cut ties with family and seek refuge overseas to avoid being detained by the authorities. Pro-democracy books removed from bookshelves. The law has created a 'White Terror' to silence dissenting voices of the Hong Kong people. All this orchestrated by the CCP with Carrie Lam as the puppet.

Just yesterday, pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai and activist Agnes Chow were arrested under the National Law.

Is SUARAM, or rather Mr Kua willing to shift his position and take a stronger stand against China and the CCP? It's unlikely but anything can happen in 2020. I myself will cross my fingers and hope that Mr Kua can truly be a human rights defender and not a two-headed, anti-West but pro-CCP, hypocrite 🐍

Malaysia Left (at least on Facebook) are awfully quiet about the aggression committed by China. I wonder why?
