Pakai Tulis #12

Dear Malaysia or should I say Malaya:

What a year huh? I am sure you are just as tired as the many of us with the bullshit you're going through this year.

More mature politics? How about a backdoor government.

More mature society? How about we unite together and wished the absolutely worst for the marginalised.

Green society? How about masks lying on the roadside, in the drain, on the fields we play football with.

I can go on and on what a downturn this eight months turn out to be but you are already bored by those rants don't you? People have been complaining online and offline, me included.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We are heading to a crossroad, or a round-a-bout. Are we certain this is how you should be moving forward? Is this the best we can do? Are we actually moving backwards now, or just running in circles?

Do you know? We still bicker the subjects we have been bickered over and over again for decades. The bickering, threats made by the old are continued by the young. When will they stop? Or should we pass our problems to our generation after? That would be selfish isn't it?

We are told you have been liberated, merdeka from the colonialist. Yet, we still suffered under the idea of race constructed by the British. Gay, Bi people still haunted by archaic law passed down by the British. The state still practice divide and conquer introduced by the British.

After all this time, 63 years, are you really free? Have our forefathers liberated you from the chains of colonialism? Or they put you in another chains, only with locks with different brands?

Is there something we ourselves can do better? Without relying on crooked politicians?

Perhaps we have to shout loud enough that we don't need a 95-year-old grandfather to run this country, or any other racists, bigots, and corrupts as well.

Perhaps we ourselves must get educated, raising awareness, organise and mobilise.

Perhaps we should tell them they should not tolerate or practice bigotry; that transgenders, migrants, refugees are humans too.

Perhaps each and every single one of us has a role to play, if we want to heal you and make you better.

Nonetheless, at least we are very proud to say we so far have endured the Covid-19 pandemic. Unlike many other authoritarian states, states where leaders are antiscience. At least our leaders have the conscious and logic to listen to our scientists. Although you have a health minister who suggested drinking warm water will flush the virus away. Anyway, we pull through without him. He can have his 500-people strong conference meeting if that's what he cares about.

The majority of our society are cooperating as well. We didn't march on the streets and yell Covid-19 isn't real. We mostly obey rules that protect us, unlike many many of our politicians who did not and got away from it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

My wish for you has always been the same. A more inclusive Malaysia. A Malaysia where everyone has a space. A Malaysia where people will be free from fear and discrimination. A Malaysia where people can have dignified jobs and dignified wages. A Malaysia where we can fit citizens and non-citizens, the marginalized and the lost.

Selamat Hari Merdeka, even though the celebration might be quieter this year, you know we love you to the moon and back.

We constantly disappoint you yet you stay, giving us hope.

Oh Malaya, you deserved so much more.
